I have been increasingly drawn to a vision of the future painted by authors like Manuel Castells, Ray Kurzweil, and Alvin Toffler where compounding technological developments realize dramatic changes in society at large. While sociocultural effects of the Industrial Revolution took generations to be made latent, the individual effects of advancements in genomics, nanotechnology, cognitive science, and quantum/information technology are poised to realize staggeringly profound changes in the human condition individually. Taken together, the horizon of plausibility may be just decades away, not millenia. Is society prepared for this? I doubt it.
